Should People on Welfare be Required to work Essay
More than _____ people across the United States received some form of government funded welfare assistance during ___yr (cit). Government programs include, but are not limited to health services, economic assistance, food assistance, and shelter assistance. The focus and design of welfare assistance programs is with the intent of aiding individuals with their essential needs. Its purpose is not to benefit deceitful individuals seeking handouts. Posed with the question, ââ¬Å"Should people on welfare be required to work?â⬠the response from a small group of my closest friends was a unanimous ââ¬Å"yes.â⬠Although, this outcome was not shocking, the degree of anger and animosity that the inquiry provokes was very intriguing, as well as the reasonsâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Alternately, there are many reasons why someone might actually not be capable of working. For example, a person caring for their terminally ill spouse or a wheel chair bound individual would be unable to leave their homes on a daily basis. Not only might someone come across the issue of his or her inability to work, but also his or her inability to find work. According to the United States department of labor, there were 9.4 million families with at least one unemployed member in 2009. As of June 2010, the employment-population ration was at 58.5 percent. Many families are simply struggling to survive due to the current recession facing our country. To enforce the requirement of those needing assistance to work there must be an availability of jobs for them to fill. Unfortunately, jobs are currently scarce. During the conversation, a prominent question raised was ââ¬Å"Why should someone else be given money that they and/or their spouses worked hard for?â⬠As previously stated current welfare programs are not designed to lavish individuals with excess, but to assist with the basic needs of their family. If a crisis arose within their own households, for example a loss of employment, assistance would be available to them as well. Many of these families including children would go hungry without the vital assistance that they receive.
